🇬🇧 The Real Threat Facing Parmigiano Reggiano: US Tariffs

🇬🇧 On paper, Parmigiano Reggiano looks remarkably healthy: production and exports up 2.7% in 2025, consumer revenue nearing 4 billion euros, and origin prices rising sharply. But behind these record figures lies a genuine source of concern for the industry: US tariffs, which have just climbed to 25% on this iconic cheese — its single biggest export market.

The United States, long the most dynamic international outlet for Parmigiano Reggiano, is becoming an increasingly uncertain market for the Consortium that manages the protected designation. Faced with this instability, many American importers are holding off on new orders until there’s more clarity, which is already slowing trade flows. The Consortium is nonetheless continuing to invest heavily — over 34 million euros in marketing in 2025 — to strengthen the brand’s global position and, if needed, offset any pullback from the US market through diversification elsewhere.
