⚠️ 🇬🇧 Infantino, Morocco and the 2030 World Cup: Football Caught Up in Geopolitics

🇬🇧 The 2030 World Cup, co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, was meant to be a centenary celebration. In recent weeks it has instead become the stage for a quiet diplomatic tug-of-war. Officially, Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu stadium remains the favourite to host the final, according to internal Spanish federation sources cited by RTVE. But several outlets report behind-the-scenes talks to hand that honour to Morocco instead — a country whose growing weight within FIFA (54 votes via the African football confederation) makes it a valuable ally for Gianni Infantino as he looks toward re-election as FIFA president in 2027.

The backdrop hardly helps depoliticise the debate: the migration crisis in Ceuta, where more than 72,000 people have entered in recent months, has strained relations between Madrid and Rabat, while Morocco simultaneously deepens its alliance with the Trump administration — a relationship Infantino himself openly cultivates too. For Samuel Ortiz, a sports geopolitics specialist, « football is projecting the geopolitical power struggles » of our time, a shift he places in the same line as contested decisions like awarding the 2034 World Cup to Saudi Arabia.

On the Spanish political scene, opinions diverge sharply: Sumar and Podemos have called for Morocco’s outright exclusion from the tournament, while the PP is demanding the government fight hard for the final or abandon co-hosting altogether. The government itself is sticking with cooperation with Rabat, hoping it will be « a success » — without publicly weighing in on any potential rupture. One analyst summed it up wryly: « Maybe Infantino has changed for self-interest, or maybe he was always self-interested — either way, it’s pure Machiavelli. »
